Getting out and about
- You may feel more sensitive to bright sunlight (mainly due to the effects
of some of the drugs). Don’t forget to keep sunglasses and a sun
hat handy.
- Join an adult education class. Most areas have these and they
are good for body and soul. You will be amazed at the choice on offer.
- Plan
ahead to avoid rushing. Fast walking takes 1½ times as
much energy as slow walking.
- Ask to borrow a wheelchair when visiting
tourist attractions with lots of walking. Lots of National Trust properties
supply these for example if booked in advance.
- If
you are planning to go on holiday ask somebody to double check all your
packed medications with you. It is so easy to forget some or pack the
wrong quantities. Also, take extra medication with you just in case you
decide to change your plans and stay longer or you get delayed.
- Keep some
spare medication in the car or for ladies in a handbag wherever possible,
but out of the reach of children. Having a spare supply in the car saves
turning back if you have forgotten anything once you have started your
journey.
- Buy a “Medic Alert” bracelet which allows people to
get information about your medical history by calling a 24-hour phone
line.
- Check to see if you are eligible for a blue parking badge which allows you to park much closer to your destination.
